LiveView newbie questions

I feel stupid asking this, but what is that box in the middle with four arrows in LiveView? I can move it around, I don't see what it's doing.

Also about the three focusing modes. Is contrast the sort of default one? Face seems to be more for moving stuff or if you know it's going to be people, or one primary main object. Do I have those two correct? Then the third mode where it uses the AF sensor, I guess that's more for when the LiveView isn't getting it right, but it's probably more accurate in general? I don't like that one b/c of how it blacks out the LCD. Other pros, cons, warnings, details please

That box is your focus point. Move it to whatever you want to be in focus.

Ok, I was expecting to automatically change on the LCD. That part was staying blurry. I guess pressing the shutter halfway is required.
