upgrade from K20D

I have a K20D that still works great and have had no problems that required service or repairs ever since I bought it new. It looks like this tax year I will be tempted to afford an upgrade.

I skipped upgrading to K-7, which just didn't warrant enough improvement for the price. I've said no thanks to novelties like K-M, K-X and K-R. I still own the 16-45 lens that came with my K20D kit. Over the years, a Sigma 135-400 was added to shoot wild life, but I never had the urge to swap for other lenses. Is it finally time to shelve my K20D for a new K-5, or buy DA 18-135 WR to shelf the 16-45 instead?

What should I replace first? or should I ask what would you replace first?

All indications I've seen are that the 16-45 provides significantly better IQ through its range than the 18-135 WR does. Seeing as you've already got a longer lens, I'd say the K-5 makes more sense. Just my 2c.

The 18-135 is an excellent all-around lens if you want to travel light. Its iq is better than that of the kit, but obviously worse than that of dedicated wide or tele zooms.

I typically shoot with primes when I'm going for quality, but I have this lens for when I just need quick snapshots.

K5. You are apparently already use to using what you have in the way of lenses.

If the excellent kit that you have is giving you the images that you want with no problems or serious shortcomings, then maybe an upgrade isn't an "upgrade". In your situation, you could easily wait for another 6 months or even longer, to get a K5 with no quality control issues, and maybe even at a much better price, especially if you get a K5 near the end of its production cycle.

I wouldn't buy a DA 18 - 135 WR to shelve the 16 - 45. I would buy it for the weather sealing if I wanted to shoot in rain, snow, dust storms or fog.

I want to get 18-135 WR, keep shooting with K20D until it breaks, pocket the $1000 or so price difference into a mutual fund until say K-3 is available? I wish I can test drive a K-5 for a day, so it can change my mind.

That's not at all a bad idea, actually. Not that my saying so is likely to help you in your indecision.

I waited 12 months to buy the k7 it was just unfortunate that they released the kr when I was about to
buy. I still went for the k7 and despite all the bad hype about noise I still find the images very
sharp.

I was told that they are going to reduce
the price of the k5 in 12 months. I've also
heard rumours about a full frame pentax as well.

I've also heard it takes two years for Pentax to come up with replacement models.
When K-3 hit store shelves, price of K-5s will be irrelevant to me, unless I can be convinced that K-3 isn't worth the step up.

Last November I read an article by a pro who said that you should never upgrade to the latest, greatest body unless it has been on the market for at least 6 - 9 months, or (preferably) unless it is at the end of its production run. Otherwise, go for the previous greatest model, or pass altogether and buy great glass instead.

From what I have read about the newest Pentaxes, Canons and Nikons, that is sound advice.
