K10D high ISO isn't great but not too bad either.

DXOmark ISO scores are 522 for K10D, 811 for K-x and 1162 for K5.
That's approximately half a stop advantage for the K-x and one stop advantage for the K5, not two or three stops. Correct me if I'm wrong!

If you look at the ISO charts though (SNR 18% chart), the K-x has less noise at 3200 than the K10 has at 1600. So at that high level the K-x has just over a stop advantage.

I have a K10D and I have gotten perfectly acceptable 16 x 20's with the 18-55mm kit lens. These were full, 10MP images, or only slightly cropped. They do not stand up to six inch viewing distances, but at a more normal three or four feet, they are fine. If you are unable to get a decent 8 x 10, either you cropped it to a tiny fraction of the original, your technique is lousy, or your standards are much higher than mine.

I will concede that ISO 1600 on the K10D leaves much to be desired.

I have found that shooting in RAW helps a lot. In a RAW image, I can deliberately underexpose by two or three stops and still bring the lost detail back on the computer. You can't do that with JPEG. This also helps get the shutter speed up to a reasonable setting, where the SR will be effective. If you have to shoot at 1 second, SR isn't going to be able to do enough to avoid camera motion blur. In my experience, even 1/4 second is too slow for SR to handle, although it comes close. But, if underexposing lets me get the shutter speed up to 1/15 second or faster, then SR may be able to work its magic. Of course, we all know that SR does nothing for subject motion.
