Rear curtain sync on the K10D

I am trying to experiment with rear curtain sync and manual off camera flash triggered by radio triggers. Does rear curtain sync work only with P-TTL flashes, and if so why?

Flash sync is old school tech. Rear curtain sync and other flash features are a whole new technology and require more communication than a simple single contact. Standard flash sync is simply the camera releasing an electro-signal when the shutter has fully opened. Rear curtain sync requires that electro-signal slightly before the shutter starts to close and let the flash know exactly how long until it starts. This requires multiple contacts to carry the info, thus dedicated flash.

But then again, I don't really know.
