To all RAW shooters

Hi all

Before having the K10D, I used to shoot in JPG. On holidays I just took enough memory cards for all photos. I usually shoot during holidays about 500-600 photos per week.

Now with the K10D, I started to shoot in RAW. RAW files use much more space. So what are you doing when traveling?

- use a lot of memory cards ?
- use a laptop ?
- sort out the photos on the DSLR screen ?
- ...?

Memory is cheap. Get more. I have been shooting raw for years and it is cheaper than ever to leave the laptop at home.

Dominique,
I can't imagine a situation that my laptop wouldn't be available sometime during the day. two 2 gig cards & 2-1 gig cards is 482 dng files, enough for a day for me. At $15 a gig that comes out to $90 cost for cards.

Thank you both.

So far, I always managed to go on holiday without laptop and hope it will continue this way. It seems I will simply have to get some more memory cards. This won't be a problem, the SD cards became quite cheap...

Any other solutions?

I got an Epson P-2000 viewer. Very cool, and displays PEF files (at least for the DS it does.)

I use a Flashtrax portable disk drive. It stores 40Gb and has a 3.5inch screen for viewing the images (jpgs, PEFs from *istD). When on a trip, I plug it in to a mains supply in the Hotel and unload the cards to it each evening.

The battery with it is useless.. it wouldn't be much use away from a car or mains supply.

I have a couple options I use. I use a Wolverine unit. It comes with different hard drive sizes, starting at 60GB. I also have an Apacer Disc steno that allows me to burn discs. I prefer to back up my photos on both before clearning the card for more use when traveling.

SD cards are cheap nowdays.. I picked up a 1 gig with a USB card reader yesterday for $25. and two 512 MB for $9.00 each.

I have a 40 Gig Vosonic external drive that has card slots so I can copy all my shots over.

I think I will have a closer look to the external harddisk drives such as the Epson P-2000 and the like. A screen to preview the JPG/PEF/DNG could be a nice feature, but not a must. I would prefer having a longer battery lifetime.

I use a 60 gig HD80. I give up the screen but gain AA battery usage. It's come in very handy as I used to only have 2 1 gig sd cards (though 60 gig for day use is a little on the over-kill side admittedly

). It's also reasonably fast at transferring images.

I went in my usual photo shop this evening to look what he offered as solution and I walked out with a Jobo Giga One which seems suited to the job. It is not very large, but 40GB should be enough.

Good that you sorted out you portable storage needs. May I ask what software you use to handle your K10D RAW files (and do you use DNG or PEF?)

I haven't started using RAW with the K10D (but did with my DS) - I'm wondering if I need to install Pentax software?

Currently, I'm using Photoshop Elements 5.0 on Windows...

Glad for any help and advice you may be able to offer.

Please let us know if it works okay with Pentax PEF or DNG files. It should, but would like to know for sure. Sure would like a screen to verify that the images transfered correctly before re-formatting a card for next day usage.

I started using more cards, because they have become less expensive. But, with the size of the K10D files, I either need more and bigger cards, or a winchester that I'm comfortable using (with a review screen).

(By the way, up to now, have always carried my laptop with me. Would like to get out of that habit, because it is just one more thing to carry on an airplane.)

The Jobo has no preview screen. I suppose it does just transfer the whole content of a memory card to a newly created folder each time the "copy" button is pressed. So the presence of JPG, PEF or DNG on the memory card should not be relevant, but I will test it tomorrow.

So far, I am shooting PEFs with the K10D, simply because they are smaller than the DNGs and convert these PEFs using Pentax Photo Lab 3.
