How would they short if it wasn't turned on though? And the aldi batteries don't have red on the ends? I assumed the red bit was from the metz flash?

I tried that but 1 battery won't go all the way in. I'm not sure why, because I can't see what's stopping it.

We had to use pliers to pull the batteries out as the plastic had melted on them, but the batteries themselves didn't look damaged, that's why in the photo you can see goudges. My bro-in-law and Chris were with me and he seemed to think it had somehow short circuited. I don't know how if the unit wasn't on?

I took the door off so I could take a better photo of the inside of it.

It doesn't have to be on for it to short... For something to short-circuit, it generally means an incorrect circuit was made. So anything like a small piece of metal fell off from somewhere and completed a bad circuit which the batteries pumped unregulated power somewhere, and then it caused the plastic to melt...

From that picture, it seems like all batteries were active during the short... I really wouldn't dare to try use that again. Which, is really really unfortunate for you =/ I don't know what you can do now with it.

Cant see why the battery wont fit unless the plastic has expanned out of shape.
This may sound silly but you did have the batterys inserted the correct way yeah?

Yeah I did have the batteries inserted correctly, my bro-in law double checked that. As did I.

I'm sending it back for a replacement, as I hadn't even had it for 24 hours. I'm just glad it was in my bag and not on my camera.

After seeing this, I sure won't be using any batteries from Aldi in my K-x...

I honestly don't think it was the batteries. Other than the plastic melting from the heat generated, the batteries were ok. I tested the batteries as well afterwards and only one was actually unable to be charged.

Wow, you are having tough luck with flashes. I keep putting off getting a flash and after your experience I may put one off a bit longer. They say the third time's the charm!

lol Heegz, I don't mean to put you off, thousands out there are having great fun with theirs I'm just unlucky I guess. Let's hope 3rd time is the charm, or I'm giving up on flashes after this. In anycase, I'll be using a pop-up flash for the wedding reception as I won't have another flash in time. And with the luck I'm having I don't dare borrow or hire one lol.
