RAW - PEF vs DNG???

I use Adobe CS2 9.0 . . . does not recognize the PEF format. If there is a plug-in I will get it but seems easier to just use DNG. Is there an advantage to staying with PEF?
Thanks

Someday

Eventually, someday soon, Pentax will release the new PEF spec (for the K10D) to Adobe and they will update Adobe Camera RAW. Nobody knows when, but it's expected sometime in the first quarter of 2007

Currently, from the samples I've seen, as convient as DNG currently is, I think it has problems. Not sure why and I'm not in any position to "quantify" them, but I suspect that Pentax and the Commercial Silkypic software will produce better results than the generic DNG's being processed in Adobe/Lightroom ect...
Any K10 users in a position to verify DNG vs PEF. Currently this would require 2 identical images in each format and Silkypicsa or Pentax Photolab.
If I had the K10 I'd be shooting PEF and using one or the other packages that currently can handle them. You can always convert to DNG later, right, but you can't "convert" to PEF. After converting the PEF to 16bit TIFF, more processing can be done w/ more of a safety net.

I asked the forums at adobe and they told me that camera raw updates are around 3-4 times a year. They think that the k10 will likely be next on the update list. at 4 times a year, sounds like the lastest would be feb 07' as I believe the last update was in late november 06'

I am hoping it will be soon

cheers

Seems about right. The driving force for a quicker release might be from Pentax users-the K10D is a big hit with lots of folks moving up from less capabilities and some actually switching brands---lots of new Photoshop customers in a market that's two years old. It will be interesting to see what other cameras get included with the update.

Lots of myths surround DNG--some have the distinct smell of dung.

Probably the main one for me is that PEFs are smaller by quite a bit.

As far as differences with the PEF and DNG files created in the K10, the DNG file does not contain the lens name in the exif data, and I think a couple other tidbits but I can't remember. For this purpose I am waiting for an update from Adobe so I can convert them later.

As far as the DNG in general, there is nothing wrong with DNG that isn't wrong with every other raw file format out there. It is actually very easy to test the effect of converting a raw file to DNG and the image is identical so it doesn't matter.

With my *istD I converted all my files to DNG because they were smaller than the PEF. When converting those files the lens name did show up in the DNG, which means it's omittion in the K10 DNG is Pentax's decission. Since the current PEF is smaller in camera I will shoot with that and see what I see when Adobe updates.
