Everyone dismisses the K-r.

You can get a K-r with 2 lenses 18-55 and 55-300 (~28 - 450mm equivalent) for right around your budget. I paid $830 about 2 months ago.

Wish I'd known that before I picked up my first one at the camera store. So true, so true. Of course now I've had one for a year and the honeymoon STILL isn't over.
