Do you have the K-x set to auto focus and not manual?

The lens should work fine as long as both the lens and the camera focus mode switches are on.

The K100 can use screw drive on a 50-135 with old firmware can it not? MAybe the SDM is dead?

I have no idea if the k100 can use a screw drive on a 50-135...

Any idea on how to "test" the SDM? I don't know anyone that has a Pentax.

Yes, both camera and lens are on auto (both switches to auto).

The autofocus works fine with a sigma 24-60 and the kx, but the lens doesn't have SDM.

Sounds like a case of SDM failure. To eliminate lens or camera

Take it to a shop and ask if you can test it on a recent body (K200D/K20D and newer should be safe). Or a friend with a similar camera.
Also test a new SDM lens on your camera.

The K100D ONLY uses screw drive; no option for SDM

Yes, but the K100D Super does support SDM. Also, it could be a typo and he really meant K10D, which, with firmware 1.30, will support SDM.

In any event, if he put it on another camera and it focused properly, then it is NOT a case of SDM failure.

The K-x definitely should support SDM.

OTOH, in the title he mentioned the KX, which most definitely will NOT support SDM. It doesn't support screw drive auto-focus, either. Of course, I'm talking about the 1978 KX film SLR. I don't think the OP is.

I guess OP would have mentioned that; and K100D explains the behaviour.

That's why I mentioned K200D/K20D No need to check firmware versions

If you put it on a K100D (or older) and it works, there is a very good chance that it's a SDM failure.

I meant the K-X.... the DSLR...lol.

I have the K100D, not the super, and the K100D does not support SDM, it uses the screw drive for focus.

I did upgrade the firmware on the K-X to the latest that they have on Pentax, but that didn't help either, neither did a new set of batteries nor cleaning the contacts.

I live just a few miles from a Pentax repair shop, so I'll see if I can get the camera an lens in to see which is the culprit. My guess is it's the lens, since that's where the mechanical part is & it's 2 years old and not the camera, which is contacts, and is brand new.

Love the pictures the 50-135 takes... bummer that the SDM isn't working.

I wish the K-X would run the screw drive on SDM lenses as an option.

Just wanted to report back that it was a faulty SDM motor.

Fixed for $189 at CRIS

I think about every Pentax user wishes for that; and not only on the K-x
