Hi, casually hex open .BIN files and found:
Download the latest/current(2011-03-23) firmware from: Software Downloads : Support & Service : PENTAX
Use some hex editor(free hex editor) and open .BIN files and use Windows Calculator to hex--> dec:
K-5 hex 01 03 16 0B = ver. 1.03.22.11
K-r hex 01 01 14 08 = ver. 1.01.20.08
K-x hex 01 02 15 0E = ver. 1.02.21.14
K-7 hex 01 0B 16 1B = ver. 1.11.22.27
K20 hex01 04 00 0B = ver. 1.04.00.11
Very Cool!

Excellent information - thank you so much for posting this.

As soon as I work out how to do it - you'll get a reputation point from me.

@mitkomk, I checked my K-x with Photome and you are correct. I hope this helps with your project. Both DSP version and CPU information are 1.02.21.14

So does this mean there are variances between firmware updates?
If so, does the camera identify these changes in the version check?

No, it simply means several builds of the firmware were built and tested with the K-x, and that the build that was chosen as most suitable for the K-x was 1.02.21.14. The candidate builds are differentiated by the minor version numbers after the 1.02.
The version check will only identify and report v1.02.
For example though I am running Windows 7 Service pack 1, a version check will return Windows operating system ver Version 6.1.7601

6 corresponds to Windows 7
.1 corresponds to service pack 1
.7601 identifies the succesful build version

The computer properties however will only report Windows 7 Service pack 1, because that is all the information a lay end user needs to know.

Although it may seem that way - everyone's version number's convention could be different.

If we take the K-x firmware - it is correct that a version check with the camera would only show the first three digits like say 1.01 -
but I know that there were released versions of:

1.01.00.05
1.01.00.07
1.01.00.10

the documentation on Pentax Japan and US sites made no differentiation between these files, but "silently" changed them - the US site is normally a few weeks behind the Japan site.

What the last 4 digits are I cannot say for sure other than obviously the later the number later the version.

We now have 1.02.21.14 -
what do the last four digits 21.14 mean? - other than they are obviously later than say 00.00 (if it ever existed) -
logically they ought to mean something and I am sure they were not arbitrarily chosen
- but any interpretation has to be guesswork -
and as one can see the K-x firmware version number is not in the same format as Windows -
nor does it have service packs -
so any resemblance,
as they say on TV,
could be purely coincidental.....
or perhaps someone is a doctor and not just playing one ?

For firmware versioning, it seems to be of the form of major.minor.maintenance.build/revision

So, major is usually something like huge rewrites or code-base changes.
minor would be additional features or bug fixes to huge problems.
maintenance could be small fixes and tweaks.
build/revision is pretty minor - can be simply described as someone hitting the Compile button on their IDE and constantly incrementing this number

This is even better THANK YOU!
another "Like" and hopefully another reputation point added
(sorry, system won't let me do it - asks me to spread reputations around first
- but what else can be more worthy?).
