Dark Pictures

I have an *ist Ds and yesterday whilst I was taking pictures both indoors with the flash and outdoors on a bright sunny day, the pictures appeared darker than normal (on the playback). When I put them on the PC they are as dark as the view on the camera..

Any solutions would be great as I need the camera to work for a day out on Wednesday

Thanks in advance

Stibbok

PS only my second post so please be gentle

We'd need a lot more info and maybe a sample shot to view with EXIF attached. For example what shooting mode? What metering method? EV setting? ISO, Shutter and aperture settings?

I cannot see the EXIF info so I got the info off the card

Auto Pict
AF.s
1/3000
F6.3
-2.oEV
ISO 200
300mm
07:51am
facing south

Is there anything else I need to add as I am new to this side of photography I have always pointed and shoot on Auto picture.

Your EXIF info of interest is "-2.oEV".
"EV" stands for exposure value and you can set it on your camera to underexpose (below zero) or overexpose (above zero) your images on purpose.
This means you underexposed the image shown by 2 full f-stops!
In other words you underexpose your images by a four times too fast exposure time.

Solution: simply push the exposure correction button (the "+/-" button on the top right) and regulate the value to "0.0").
Hope this works...

What kind of a flash are you using that will sync to 1/3000 (or 1/300 for that matter)? I know many will but the built in, for instance, will not. With EV -2, at 1/3000, unless you are shooting straight into the sun, it's going to be dark. Even then, you'll see a bright spot for the sun and the rest will be nearly black.
