Well in at least one way the K-x is better than the K-r, it doesn't have the FF issues in low light. The K-x has better IQ than the K-7 above ISO400. Really you need to get a K-5 to have a clearly better camera than the K-x.

Nobody mentioned the double image blurring problem at 1/60s?

Erratic battery meter that doesn't meter correctly?

Have you all got perfect copies?

??mine does not have those problems...
If you buy one and it has the old firmware just stick new lithium batteries in it, download the latest firmware (there is a thread with prescise instructions, pointers and advices about the different sources..),
install it and Bye bye problems.

Even though the K-r is a more refined entry-level model, I'll go as far as to say I'd comfortably use my K-x to do a paid shoot like a wedding or concert.

Just to add to the chorus - no shutterblur problems either and with the firmware update, the battery indication thing has completely gone as well.

All flippancy aside -
not denying that some K-x's may have had some of those problems -
BUT the majority did NOT.

If those problems were in the majority or consistent -
the K-x would not continue to sell in large quantities
and gather consistently favorable reviews.

This is a real case of squeaky wheel -
where a few negative reports taints an otherwise really good camera.

I've had my K-x since Nov/2009 -
not a single one of those problems -
can I really have the only good copy?

I would be interested in any camera that has been totally fault free -
at any price.

Technically, given that the K-x is now discontinued, the answer can only be K-r.

But even if you can still get the K-x from remaining stock, the answer is still K-r.

If you have the K-x, it may not be worth upgrading, but if you start clean, just get the K-r - it has important improvements over K-x - AF point confirmation in VF, faster burst rate, higher top ISO, newer AF system, higher resolution LCD.

None of this are crucial and may not be worth the price gap..so it really depends on the price gap, the budget and if you may be annoyed by the tungsten light problems ( i would since i live a lot at night...but you may be fine with it).

If price would be an issue, it would settle the question already.

The body is NOT the most important, the LENSES are, so take a hard look at what each system offers...
Nikon boasts lens availability yet all the entry level Nikon cameras do not support the AF lenses and do not support metering on manual focus nikon lenses (e.g. AI-S).. to me this is a joke.. the Pentax K-X support stop down metering on their old manual focus lenses.. teh m42 lens.. doens't matter what lens.. you can use it with the Pentax.

I heard they used Canon body for Nikon lenses on The Corpse Bride for the stop motion animation snaps--because the Canon body supported the older Nikon lenses better than Nikon did LOL..

Seems like pentax k-x is the way to go for entry level dslr.. it's better than the Nikon D3100 and the entry level Canons. Also it has built in image stabilzation.. so you get IS with even an old M42 lens

The k-r has a little more noise at higher ISO than the k-x, but it does have the hi-res lcd. I am going to get the K-X myself because I dont need that hi-rez lcd.. I shoot 35mm film even and never even had a screen before.. I am sure I can get by with lo res screen

Thinking about buying it from these guys (hope they are reputable):

I'd say that it's more like ISO800.
