Since lenses are the most important i would probably go for a Kx and the 70-200 f2,8...or the K5 body, no kit lens (probably 100 or so cheaper), and save that money for a better lens (you probably got lenses to use your new flamboyant k5 body).
If the pro features are something you really need go for the k5 body and hang with the lenses you got untill you can buy the lense that will fit your needs perfectly.
The kit lens, despite being decent as it is, will probably be changed and relegated to some cupboard for the rest of it's days so why spend those extra bucks when you can buy the body all alone?

A K-7 w 16-45 should be LE$$ than a K-5 w 18-55 - so number two is your best bet - as long as you plan on buying more lenses, which should be inevitable... I wouldn't even consider the 3rd or 4th option.

I agree, K-5 w/ kit lens is a great starting option. You will want to buy some primes, but this can wait.

Which lenses do you already own? For portraiture, the DA17-70 will be the better choice from what you listed, but if you already have a DA70 or FA77, that point is moot

Go for the K-5 with the WR kit lens. In one actual test the kit lens comes very close to the expensive 16-50 - read the extract:-
Comparing DA 18-55mm AL II and DA* 16-50mm on the K20D
The surprise is that at a smaller aperture, like f8 or f16 the kit lens comes pretty damn close to the DA* 16-50 in terms of sharpness. In fact the 18-55 was noticeably sharper than the 16-50 at 28mm. Set to 18mm at f4.0 the DA* clearly beats the kit lens.

The AL II and WR versins are identical but for the weather sealing on the WR.
You can always sell the kit lens after you have mastered the camera and buy another good one.

The kit lens is valuable if you are new to the system...he had an *ist so i'm assuming he already has got some lenses lying around....
And all lenses tend to be good at small apertures (at f8 the main differences can be color rendition and contrast),the most recent pentax kit lenses are particularly good compared to other system lenses (or that is what most reviews say), i doubt the kit lense will be much better than the lenses he already has, maybe he gains weather sealing, that's why he may want to consider save that money for another purchase.

i'm curious, as sterretje, about which lenses does the OP already own.

I vote for the K-5 and the WR kit lens, sell your old kit lens. You will want the WR lens to go with your WR camera.

I suppose it depends how much extra you pay for the kit lens, too... I probably would have given the kit lens a miss when I got my K20d, ...but it was free, so here it is.

the lenses i own are in my sig

Kit 18-55mm and Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6
In which case I vote for K7 + DA17-70. No real need in general for low light with portraiture (in my opinion of course).

Really? You pick the K-7 with the DA17-70 even though it will cost the equivalent of almost $300 USD more than a K-5 with the kit lens?

Why not buy a used K7 and invest in some nice glass? Currently, seems like used K7s are going for 700-ish dollars and with that in mind, you should be able to pick up, say, a Tamron 17-50 f2.8. I view the K5 as a K7 with a sensor upgrade. A very nice upgrade, but if you will shoot mainly at lower isos, it may not be worth the increased cost to get one.

The thing is that his pentax dealer has overpriced K7...just as here in madrid, you can get the K5 for 200 € more than the k7. The thing is that the clubbing and concerts will need that Low light capabilities unless you decide to go with a flash setup (it'll capture things differently..i personally would like the two of them, low iso and flash).
I believe that if he picks the K7 he will be soon looking for something to fill that low light need (may it be a kx or a flash or a k5 body) thus losing or spending more money in the process.
The k7+17-70 for 200 € more just seems a bad deal to me comparing to the k5+kit lens.
What are the prices of the bodies alone? that is usually very significative...as i said before here the difference is of 200€ wich, for me, means a clear decision towards the k5.

With the given prices in the poll options, yes. I estimated the K5 option + 18-55WR + DA17-70 to be about 1700-1800 Euros.

Well that just doesn't make any sense. READ...

as i said, these prices are from my nearest pentax dealer but i have also done some research on other dealers i have visited:

Bodies:

K-5 Body: 1079 to 1159 EUR

K-7 Body: 877 to 899 EUR
In other words YOU would choose a K-7 over the K-5 because it is 190 euros less than the K-5. Well that's just plains nuts and bad advice for the OP.
