Thanks for the responses guys.

I ended up going with the K-x. In the end, I found a decent price (sub 600, after taxes and shipping), for the black model with 18-55mm and 50-200mm lenses included. Seems like it would suit my needs a little more than the k-r at this point.

K-X has a well known and much discussed double image blurring problem at 1/60s or 1/90s. Not everyone reported it but enough users did to suggest that the camera has an issue. It was discussed at length on this forum. All those who say they don't know about it consider yourselves lucky that you haven't seen it. Maybe the later versions of the camera were fixed quietly by Pentax.

The battery meter in spite of the firmware upgrade still does not read battery power correctly and shows red when there is still a quite a bit of life left in the batteries, making it difficult to know when the batteries are about to run out of juice.
