Don't worry about the wife and MIL.

I take the camera to family events because "I" want to take the photos ... in the way I want to.

I don't like the setup shots of family ... although sometimes people want them ... i will do them ... but most of the time ... the best images I take of family is just walking around and takiung them without them knowing ... I really dislike "staged face-on images".

Candid seems to come out a lot better ... and your subjects are more relaxed ... without that "fake smile" look about them.

I usually don't have a plan when going out shooting ... I just shoot on whim most of the time ... and capture what I see.
