Well, you can go the cheap route. Opteka makes a cheap stabilizing rig that works quite well. I have one that I purchased to do small clips when the filmers that travel with me (skateboarding related) need an extra point of view. The plastic that it is made of acts somewhat as a shock-absorb'r (kind of hard to explain) - these things work surprisingly well when shooting below the hip and are really comfortable to handle and hold.

For the price, this has proven to be a great investment. I bought it for filming a church camp that lasted a week.
I was able to run through the woods with a much better shot than if I was just holding my dslr itself.

You do however have to hold it from the top bar to get the full stabilization, that it why it is marketed to use below or at the hip...
