Must-have accessories?

So i just got my k-5 about a week ago. What are some accessories that you consider must-haves? Right now i have my k-5, an 18-135, a case, and a CustomSLR strap (oh, and a POS tripod we had laying around the house). Any recommendations?

Welcome aboard!

Marumi - There is a nice discussion with links to comparison tests for CPL Filters here:

There is another thread that asks this precise question about buying their first K-r:

First let us start with the basics.

Get a good card. Like a Sandisk Extreme III 16 Gb (or better 2 to be safe).

Then think of a carry bag: eg top loader, sling, ... to carry the camera with you when you go outside.

Spare battery? Your battery will last as long as it is charged. If you remote, you may need a spare battery. Or better a battery grip with extra batteries.

I would rate the above very high for my uses as an outdoor shooter.

Hope that the comment will assist.

You definitely need one of these to blow away dust and clean with:

Are you recommending a graduated screw in ND filter? Or do you mean a square filter?

I am recommending a -3 ND and a graduated ND as well for horizon shooting.

A polarizer is a must. UV is optional, but I like their protection.

Pentax remote control is also a good, cheap investment.

For a K-5 I'd dump the POS tripod. Bad tripods ruin good photo gear...always.

Apparently an extra battery so you can keep it on standby with just a bit less than full charge. Even a knock-off supposedly will do.

If the hyperactive mirror syndrome should ever strike your K-5, you'll be ready to keep going. And if it doesn't, you'll still have extra juice in your back pocket just in case.

I carry:
  • extra memory card
  • spare 3rd party battery (I alternate them)
  • Cokin-style filter holder with adapter rings for both lenses, plus ND filters (x1, x3 and x8) and a CPL filter. I don't use graduated ND filters.
  • the paper manual
Originally I used the bag from my previous camera but when I got an extra lens it would only all fit in in one specific way, so I took all the kit to a shop and found a bag it would all easily fit in regardless (more or less) of how I packed the case.

I also often carry a tripod. If I go walking with it I use a small backpack instead of the camera bag.

A $67 Raynox DCR 150 clipped onto your 18-135 will give excellent macro photos up to 1X at a reasonable (8") working distance. Automatic lens & flash features will continue to work.

A whole new world of things to photograph!
