Pentax 1st D

This is my 2nd post since joining so bear with me. I primarily use film using Pentax SLRS but am taking a trip to the state of Washington in early September. Since I am flying out I just do not want to go through the problems of taking several film bodies, 4 - 5 lenses, 15 - 20 rolls of film, etc and decided to take my 1st D which is the only DSLR I have ever owned. Though I do much more in film I really like the 1st D for size and simplicity (compared to the current complex DSLRs) plus it takes good RAW images (poor jpgs). I found a potential problem and sent it in for inspection and repair if necessary. When shipping I was not sure how much to insure the DSLR for. I checked Google and eBay for current selling prices for used bodies. I could not believe what the asking price was for the only unit on eBay speaking $999.95. Two sources on Google had new bodies and the prices ranged upwards to over $2K.

This is a very nice DSLR and I really do like it but it is 2003 technology and 6.1 megapixel.

Besides being Pentax's first DSLR what would make the camera so expensive? Doing searches on eBay I found only the K5 commanded a higher price. Another factor is there was only one (1) 1st D on eBay and a fair amount of other Pentax DSLRS.

Hi. There is no plausible reason for the *ist D to be currently priced at those ridiculous amounts. I could hardly find a buyer myself for a perfectly working *ist D plus D-BG1 grip for over $220 a year ago. It's a great little camera, but you can now do better for very little money. In fact, a K-x would be a very good 'upgrade' from the *ist D - similar weight and size, but no grip available. Nevertheless, you can find one for less than $400.

That price is outrageous for a *ist D.

Greed and the fact that most everyone thinks their items are vintage and therefore should command insane prices.

My suggestion would be to look on the PF marketplace. These pop up every so often. I picked one up about a year ago for under $200 (without grip). Or post a query in the Want section of the marketplace. Also take a look at KEH, where I picked up a grip.
I second Ash on the idea of a K-x; more updated technology at a good price.

Hi, Jim
I am in Mi too and i have a few *ist ds and a few Pentax and Ricoh film slr
I have seen same thing on *ist ds , for prices way above market, accompanied by a 2004 review.
I think it is trawling for the un informed buyers who may not notice the dates.
I have been looking, also, for an *ist film slr for my collection
and there are some up there for ridiculous prices.
From my limited knowledge, the *ist film job had a lot of ist d features but did not
for some strange reason at the time, have M mode for the manual lenses (??),
making it even of less value to a collector.
Market ad absurdum,
so caveat emptor

At this point just about the only reason to pick up an *ist D would be for old style TTL flash compatibility. I would agree with the other assessments here that the camera is worth somewhere in the $100 to $200 range depending on condition and accessories. I recently ended up with an *ist series camera at no charge because it was thrown in as a bonus with a bunch of other gear.

At this stage the K10d is heading for $300, the K20d is heading for $400 and the K7 is heading for $600 as newer generations of used cameras push prices for older gear down. I expect the dealers with higher prices are trolling for suckers.

Some old items may be priced at outrageous prices under the theory that just one sale will bring a huge profit and cover the costs of listing many other items that never sell.

Except for TTL, I don't see the appeal of buying that one particular model. You can get 6mp with the K100 and have SR, and there are many other models available at reasonable prices, probably close to what any repair would cost.

I think the only reason is someone out there fishing to find an idiot.

*istD cameras are regularly priced for about $200 but note that the *istD was a very expensive camera new.

I think the lowest it ever got retail, was in the $1500 range. Mine was $2200CDN new in november 2003.

This is one reason I don't sell it, compared to new value it is worthless, BUT since I own about 30 K and M42 mount lenses, the metering, which is better than any other pentax DSLR with legacy lenses, and TTL flash make it very worthwhile.

It is still a capable performer even though the 6MP is low in today's standards, you can print easily beyond 13 x 19 from a full frame.

Hmmmm...............I should have reread my post several times. Looks like I am looking for a 1st D and I am not. I have one that I was sending in for a repair and was looking for the going used price for insurance purposes when I came across these outlandish prices. I had checked B&H, Adorma and KEH to see if they had used units to obtain a cost reference and they had nothing. Was able to get mine repaired for $50 and it has under 2,000 exposures so it is almost like new.............but with 2003 technology.

Lowell - I agree with you about someone "fishing for an idiot". Every day there is someone "who will buy a bridge". I paid $1,200 for mine at B&H back almost 7 years ago in 2004. I have been a Pentax user since 1983 and mainly use film using an LX, PZ-1P, Super Program and KX. I have a number of "A" lenses which work perfect with the 1st D along with some M42 mount lenses. The TLL flash is a big plus.

Well fixing yours for $50 is a bagain, and if you're happy with the *ist D for your purposes it's worth it.
