Spit on sensor

The first time I got dirt on the sensor of my Istd, I did a stupid thing - I just blew in to the camera! I was on holiday in Spain, no camera stores and no idea what to do. I could not get the residue off and eventually upgraded to a K200d, leaving the Istd as a back up. After a while I figured the camera wasn't much good as it was so put some drops of lens cleaner on the sensor glass, I have been told it's just a cover over the sensors, rubbed it with a lint free cloth and blew it all away, been great ever since. Not sure if I'm just lucky or sensor cleaning is over hyped, your opinions would be appreciated.
