i get alerts to a thread i subscribed to . i do i unsubscribe?

Go to your subscribed threads page - click the box on the right for the thread you want to unsubscribe - go to the bottom of the page and change the Move To Folder drop down menu to Delete Subscription.

The simple skin version of this is a drop down menu under Thread Tools. I've never noticed that before. Nice to know.
