Received my Pentax K10D

I received my Pentax K10D today. After rebate, the 18-55mm kit with a 2GB Kingston SD card will cost me only $615. I can tell you this thing was worth every penny. Of course, that's just a first impression, but this camera is beautiful. The only thing I was annoyed about was that it didn't fit in my camera bag.... Oh well, that's for later. I'll have some photos for you guys later this week.

Teehee, congratulations. I had the same problem too when i tried to fit it in my old camera bag...darn i really liked mine too lol. Beware when shopping around, you'll want something slighty larger than you think if you plan to pack an extra lens.

Try the DA 50-200, excellent lens and will complement the 18-55 well, covering almost the entire range for most applications. Enjoy and dont forget to post some pics

Screw mount lenses like the SMC takumar 50 1.4 or 135/3.5 are cheap and ultrahigh quality (you will need the adapter tho). If you want a cheap autofocus with some macro capabilities I would advice you the tamron 70-300. For less than 200 you can also find fast standar lenses like the F50 1.7.

The Pentax is nice and a very good lens but having tried and used both IMO the Tamron is better. Plus you get Macro 1:2 (pretty damn good for a lens in this price range) and the longer reach which can really make a difference.

As for camera bags. When you shop for one take into account that you might add a grip at some point. it adds about 30% to the bottom of the camera. I haven't taken mine off since I bought it except to change batteries.

Oh, wow. I guess I'll have to go for one of those big ones then.

The one thing I noticed is that white balance is off in the photos. The "softness" of the JPEGs doesn't bother me because they don't seem very soft to me, considering I moved up from a Nikon Coolpix 8700. The white balance does. I don't like some of the yellowness of the photos. Can somebody recommend settings to get rid of the yellowness? What do you guys use for custom white balance?

Well we'll need some more detail here. Shooting indoors, outside? AWB or choosing your own setting? You may need to spend some time with the manual and learn how to use a white balance card if this is indoor stuff with incandecent lighting.

I was taking photos inside with AWB. I tried fooling around with the manual settings, but I need more time with those. I was just looking for a quick fix, before I start tuning this camera tomorrow.

Congratulations for you, newcomers to our family! Welcome!

As for the lens, this depends on what do you want and how much money you are willing to spend. If you don't know what do you want, and are not limited in money, get yourself an ultrazoom Tamron/Pentax 18-250 and after that you can see what focus range you use most. And, if ultrazoom's quality will be not enough, you can buy special lens for that focal range.
If you want cheap ultrazoom solutions - find yourself an old manual 28-200 (Kiron 28-210 is very good), they are dirt-cheap.

Another person moved from Ultra-zoom to Pentax Yesterday I decided to start a blog for such people who moved from ultrazooms to first dslr (like me also) about Pentax. Not much there yet, but still, please come in - Snowcat's Pentaxian Blog . Comments about my blog appriciated - is it worth doing?

I use this.

Here is a composite "before and after" photo showing the effect when used to correct for very strong and very harsh sodium lights:
