The pins on the body, what does each do?

Hello,

I'm trying to understand all those pins between bodies and lenses, and what exactly they do. I believe some of them are used as binary messages telling the camera which f stop the user has chosen. And another indicates an SMC-a lens, another communicates AF. Anyone have a really good handle on this that could clarify?

Many thanks
