help w/infrared hotshoe transmitter

hi everyone. first post here.

i recently bought a couple of small strobes to aid my location shooting (interfit ex-150). they have a wireless infrared sensor that can be triggered either by the on-camera flash or a hotshoe-mounted infrared transmitter, which i would prefer to use.
however, unless i'm shooting in Auto mode on my *istDL, i can't get the hotshoe to send a signal through the transmitter. i'd like to shoot in Manual or Av mode, but setting the flash on Manual mode requires the pop-up flash to be up, practically defeating the purpose of even having these lights.

am i overlooking something simple and obvious or am i looking to do something impossible?

chk your sync speed for strobes.
I don't know i*SDL, but on my k10 its 1/180s when im using radio triggers for strobes.
For those cheap ebay triggers from gadget infinity shutter speed should be even lower 1/125 or lower. Of course in manual mode.
