K10D + 10-17mm Fisheye

Any users with this combination??

I am thinking about it for mixed use as a fisheye, and wide angle lens.

Also anyone with experience on de-fishing software that runs on a Mac??

If you want straight lines, why bother with a fisheye? The curve is everything (almost).

Yeah, but you don't get many 180 degree shots from rectilinear lenses

A very versatile lens.
The images look more natural than you might think now.

Sometimes if I really need a corrected one, I defish using Pano-tools (freeware).

I have it. It is a good performer on the K10D. As with most lenses of this type, watch out for the CA.

It is possible to get straight lines with the FE, if you carefully compose your image.

For defishing, I use PTLens.
PTLens

I just noticed PTLens does not run on a Mac. Sorry.

The fisheye has only 2 straight lines - horizontal and vertical through the center - but as pointed out, careful composition can make a big difference in apparent distortion.

I have the lens and like it. I don't think you can use it for "mixed use" though. It's always going to have some fisheye effect. Perhaps the 12-24 would be better for the mixed use. That is one outstanding lens.

You are getting used to it.
I am now so far that I find the fisheye image more natural/normal than an ultrawide rectilinear image.
Of course it depends on the application. For architecture it is certainly not the most appropriate lens.

I bought one after a sudden rush of blood to the head, combined with the current good exchange rate to the US dollar. Even before it arrived I was overcome with buyer's remorse, thinking "Well this won't see much time out of the camera bag, except for when I want a particularly special effect." How wrong I was; it's surprisingly useful. There are certain situations to keep it away from (mainly the obvious ones, where straight lines must be straight lines), but otherwise it's a gem of a lens. Cheaper and smaller and lighter and wider than a rectilinear lens, and really doesn't sacrifice much to gain those features.

This is an interesting shot in that it is shot at 10mm, and defished in PTLens. I usually don't try to defish anything less than about 15mm.

Your great images prompted my query. Keep them coming. They show a lot of imagination, and the combination of HDR, and fisheye is spectacular.

The old adage still is correct - "if you want interesting photos, you go to interesting places".

I also have the fisheye and love it. I was playing around taking pictures of my kids last night and onlyl was using the 40 limited and my new 16-45, and had left the fisheye in my bedroom....and wished I hadn't.

I love that lens, I truly think its my fave. I might like the 12-24 if I had it in my bag too, but I cannot tell anyone a bad thing about mine. There's a shot of 2 ships in my gallery, taken with the 10-17, and I love it

As for worrying about any de-fisheye software and a mac? Run something like VMWare fusion (70 bucks with a 20 dollar rebate), Parallels or if you got OSX 10.5, Boot camp. I have an XP partition and will be running PSE on that, since the windows version is newer/better than the native mac version.

Tho, maybe there is mac-compatible software too, haven't felt the need to look
