: Novice Prtographer : Please let me know if this is a good Flash

I am a Point and Shoot guy and recently jumped into DSLR arena with the purchase of Pentax K10D. It came with the kit lens.

I want to buy a flash and for multiple reasons, I am not looking at flashes that cost in hundreds of dollars.

I use the camera in Auto mode, aperture priority mode and shutter priority mode.

On ebay, I saw this item

TTL Dedicated AF Flash for Pentax K100D K110D K10D - (eBay item 360004409819 end time Dec-17-07 10:06:42 PST)

I have no idea if I should even consider this or not.

Can you gurus please advise me.

If it were me, I'd pass on it. you mentioned wanting to stay below the hudreds dollar mark, but if money's a concern I'd wait and save up and get something like the Pentax AF360. You will find that you will always need more power, so it makes sense to save up and get all you can at first.

This one by pentax is just over the $100 mark, but honestly I would bite the bullet and spend another $60 for the 360 or save up just a little bit longer and get the 540 (I wish I had waited and got the 540 rather than the 360).

Welcome to the forums!

With this flash, you'd have to use the camera primarily in Manual mode to make the most out of it, as the flash itself doesn't seem to have any real auto-settings.
*EDIT* Oops, I guess it says it does have more settings that what it looks like in the photos... still, I'd pass on it myself.

I don't know much about Digital Concepts (the makers of this flash) though, so can't comment on quality in any way.

If I were you, I'd look at a cheaper Sunpak or Vivitar (something like the 730AFPK, which tilts and swivels and can be had for around $60)

You get what you pay for, unless it is a proven workhorse like the Vivitar 283/285 it is going to be hard to cut corners when it comes to flashes. Pentaz and Sigma are your best bets.

Digital Concepts is a kind of generic brand- Ritz rebadges a lot of their stuff as 'quantaray' and I've seen some Digital Concepts stuff marked as being made by Sakar, FWIW.

Check around. I believe the Pentax AFZ360 is $145 online after rebate. That's a steal.
