Just how good is the K5?

Hi there, the 90 cash back on the K5 is greatly tempting me away from my K20D but I have not played with a K5.

So, all you people out there that have upgraded from the K20 - K5 just how much better is the K5 over the K20? How much sharper are the images?

I don't know if it can be readily quantified but I would value any informed opinions.

Cheers - Bill

I don't know that I find it sharper. I do like the color rendition better, the K20 colors are a bit harsher to my eye. And the noise handling is much improved. It's also a bit smaller, not a problem for me because even for a woman I have small hands. I have never regretted upgrading, and I did it before the price drop. I shoot indoors fairly often, so the high ISO capabilities are really valuable to me.

It's awesome and worth an upgrade. But you might want to wait to see what's next since its a year into its life span.

The K5 is worth the upgrade. Better dynamic range, frames per sec, noise handling. If the K20 still meets your needs then wait for the next incarnation. I have upgraded thru the K10, K20, and K7. I will be keeping the K5 for several years before my next upgrade.

I think the answers depend on how you shoot(ie. RAW or JPG). However for me(RAW) the K-5 is leaps and bounds over the K20D. It provides better detail(microcotnrast), cleaner high ISO, more DR and faster FPS. Which are all very important attributes to my shooting needs.

Hope this helps.

Of course, whatever is released next is going to be full price (probably 1500 dollars?).

There are some things that can be improved on in the K5, but it is an awfully good camera, certainly a big step over the K20 in any way that I can particularly think of. I would go for it (I'm thinking of getting a second K5 so my wife and I don't have to fight over who gets the K5 and who gets the K7).

If you get a K5 that works properly, then it's like night and day from the K20.

Could you elaborate a bit on the "if you get a K5 that works properly" part??

Reading the forums, it appears to have more ways of failing than other cameras. I suspect this gives a somewhat higher than normal rate of failure as well.

I used a K100D and a K7 after that.
K5 is better in every way.

Faster AF.
More resolution
sharper or can be sharpened more due to less noise artifacts
much better DR
very useful in-camera HDR mode for night shots involving city lights

I traded up from a K20, and you won't be disappointed.

Yeah it's a pretty big upgrade- the K20 is slow and sluggish in comparison.

The only thing that the K-5 hasn't impressed me with is its video mode. IQ, on the other hand, is pretty much best-in-class.
