Hi,

I have been using Pentax K7 since last year before i upgraded from Pentax K200d. is it worth it to upgrade to Pentax K5 or should i wait for the next model?

Thanks a lot!

Then go for K-5. However there is no very big differences between them in other aspects. Exceptf for small improvements , like AF, Live view, Movie mode.

As a K-5 owner I have ask myself, how can the next camera be any better?
Either Pentax will surprise us with something very unexpected such as faster x-sync, 19AF points, manual controls for video, shutterless sensor readout option, or even full frame...
or the next camera will essetially be identical with K-5, only with more megapixels.
I'm pessimistic and I bet it will be the latter. And then just buy the K-5.

Hi,

Have you tried the settings that Adam had posted?

All I know is my K-7 was sitting on a shelf much of the time because I simply couldn't use it the way I wanted to in the circumstances I most wanted to use it in; the K-5 isn't.

Yup. I already tried Adam's post but still not near k5 performance. High iso is really useful during events. For studio works k7 has no problem since i'm using low iso. But rather than going with pentax k5, i'm still considering waiting for the next model because it might be out in a few months.. Maybe.. K7 is a solid camera except for its iso performance.

The K-5's sensor indeed sits the K-7 down in terms of image quality. There are a few other significant improvements; see our review for a list of those:
Pentax K-5 - Review

At the moment, nobody's got a clue what Pentax's next DSLR will be like. It could continue to use the same sensor and have upgraded features (that would be the best course of action by Pentax, IMO - to improve AF, image processing speed, LV and movie performance), or it could surprise us by featuring the 24Mp Sony sensor, would could cause the IQ to tank. We will have to wait and see!

I had the K7 and then bought a K5 to go along with it. When out shooting (events or birding) I got so frustrated with the K7 in comparison to the K5 that I sold it ... and last week bought another K5 to keep the first one company. Wonderful high ISO blows the K7 out of the water but then so does the enhanced DR, colour depth, improved AF and a host of other tweaks. There is such a difference between the two that, WR & ergonomics aside, it's not fair to compare them.

As for waiting ..... well I bought my second K5 for US$920 and when the K3/K1 appears you can bet that it will be in the US$1600 - 1800 range, so if you are not prepared to be an early adopter and pay the piper then you are looking at a two year wait at least until it gets close to US$1,000. Life is too short for that.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be in Hong Kong in december and the price is almost the same with Frogfish's second K5. if i find a good deal, it will be a perfect birthday gift for myself.
i hope pentax can make a camera with the k5/k7 body with a 645d sensor. haha wishful thinking. thanks guys!
