When I got my hands on the k100d I felt the camera was made just for me

. It was my first dslr but i upgraded from a fuji s5500 so I had read about a lot of stuff.

Anyways, there's something that I can't still understand with the k100d. I use Av 99% of the time and have tried to set the iso to auto (set the auto iso to 200-1600). But when I leave it in auto the camera doesn't change the iso to anything but 200 even if I'm in low light and very low shutter speeds (1/6s or slower). It happens with all the lenses I have, mf or af, pentax or third party.

Am I missing anything here?

that's not right. it should bump the iso until it can get 1/FL.

Do you have either a plus or minus adjustment on the EV? That will cause the ISO to default to 200.

Nope. I've set it to 0 ev.

You have just discovered one of the quirks of the K100D. When you use exposure +/- compensation with Auto ISO, the camera defaults to ISO 200. Do what I do. Forget Auto ISO and set your ISO manually.

OP claims there is no EV in operation. I recently started "forgetting" about Auto ISO, and then "forgot" to set it as needed a few times :-(

I think the auto ISO doesn't work in Av, Tv and M modes. I know that, because I use those three modes, but my wife uses P or "green" A. Her pictures are taken with iso 400 or 800 most of the times in bad light conditions (and no flash). I was also wondering, why the camera doesn't alter ISO, when I shoot, and then I came to this conclusion.
But on the other hand, I'm pretty happy about this, because ISO 800 is usable ony with no crop. With 100% crop the images are crap on the computer screen. I will however try to print some one paper to see if there is any difference.

It doesn't work even if I keep ev set to 0. What's the point of auto iso if it's crippled?

I don't think it is crippled. When you shoot in any other then green auto or "P", you should know what to set ISO value to and other parameters of course. K100D is not P&S camera, so use your photographis knowledge on your SLR. ;-)

Well then, having all the photographic knowledge I don't need Tv or Av either. You know it's a poor excuse. I want to focus only on aperture and don't want to deal with menus if the camera is supposed to change the iso for me.

My K100D (not Super) auto changes iso up to 3200 (have it set from 200-3200) in AV or TV mode when necessary in dim light. Could be the camera?

I just shot a few pictures with my K100D in AV mode and set on auto ISO and it changed the ISO depending what the F stop was set to.

Yep. I concur.
My K100D chooses the ISO according to the shutter speed required in Av mode, only when ev is 0.
Change the ev, then all shots are at ISO 200 (would be nicer if it was auto ISO then as well).

This auto ISO works for all modes for me (except M of course), but have been getting in the habit of setting my own ISO anyway. The K10D goes that step ahead with its own Sv mode... (no, I'm not jealous...

)

According to the manual I know everyone has read more than once...

Auto ISO does not work in M or B, with flash, auto-bracketing, or EV compensation.

Don't ask what I did wrong - but took some pretty-nostalgic family pics last weekend that I won't (ever) be able to take again.
And guess what?
The JPG's all came out at 3200

So instead of having marvellous pics - I've got marbled pics...
Oh well, I AM still learning...
Back to PS7...
