X-sync vrs Manual on the K10D with external non-dedicated flash

I've asked this before in a slightly different way.

Why would I use X-Sync over going into "Manual" on the K10D when triggering an external non-dedicated flash (like the Vivitar 283)?

X-Sync locks the shutter @ 1/180'th and sets the ISO to the lowest value you selected for AUTO ISO. That's the only thing I see that sets it apart... it sets to the cameras maximum Flash Sync speed (for non-dedicated untis).

Of course, there's times a slower shutter speed would be beneficial.... so what's the overall thought here?

There are some deeper philosophical issue you should recognize while 'syncing' your flash:

Pentax has, for decades, produced excellent cameras and lenses dedicated to photographers. That seems a bit obvious but...

Every Pentax camera I own is dedicatd to one simple goal: getting a picture, a photograph. You don't find anything like the 'picture modes' of Canon, or the 'metering modes' of Nikon on a Pentax (d)SLR--you find spot, center-weight and matrix metering and rapid convienient controls for aperture and shutter speed (just the basics in all regards).

The K10 does depart from basics with Sv and Tav modes and extended bracketing, but it's an artistic departure, not a technical deviation.

So the answer to your question is two-fold but simple: provide a failsafe novice setting (x-sync) while allowing reasonable and logical variance ("there's times a slower shutter speed...") with the flick of a wheel.
