Why there is no 3rd party WR lens?

To my knowledge, there is no 3rd party WR lens for Pentax, if that's true, why is it that way?

It would be great to have more WR options available when buying 3rd party lenses for Pentax.

I'm very likely wrong on this but I don't think there are very many 3rd party WR lens for any mount.

The current 12-24 on B&H is advertised as "splash proof design"

Checking online, it seems it's not really "weather sealed" like the DA* lenses are. There's one Canon review out there that says they've used it in rain and it was fine, but they end the review saying it's not weather sealed. Dunno if that makes a difference.

IMAO, it all comes down to liability... If anything went wrong with your camera while using a 3rd party WR lens (in the rain for example), who exactly would be liable if in warranty or not?

Well that should be fairly easy to identify the culprit based on the same procedure that Pentax currently have. It's not only about WR, there are currently several features supported by 3rd party manufacturers that could go wrong with a lens and that could potentially impact the body, I take for example, the HSM, the screw drive, the electronic contacts, etc.

In my opinion it's more about the ROI. Pentax has a small market share and manufacturers are not willing to invest in. Lenses are more less generic, a change in the mount generally suffice to support multiple brands while WR is very specific.

I've used my FA31Ltd in pissing rain without ill effects. I think I'm gonna stick a WR label on it and sell it for a profit

Yup in their press release they indeed said that this lens was coming for Pentax, but after the Canon and Nikon versions, of course. You're right, though- no ETA yet.

Another bummer is that the lens is F4.5-5.6; I guess that's the price for making it full-frame compatible.

When Pentax comes closer to competing head-on with Canon and Nikon, maybe more WR lenses will come up

A thought there though, since Canon and Nikon does have bodies with seals - at least the semi-pro level and up, are there a lot of WR lenses for those?

When coupled with the right camera body (generally Canon's 1-Series bodies), many lenses in the Canon L Series provide water resistance.
