What should buy?

You all should have fun with this since you will be spending my money.

A typical shooting situation for me is with my K7 and Pentax 55-300. I find that I can get shots that are acceptable to me up to ISO 2500 when cleaned up with Topaz Denoise. Shooting action outdoors under sometimes overcast skies I wind up with a lot of shots in the 200-300mm zoom range at ISO 1250-2500. Shutter speed sometimes suffers.

Should I buy a K5 to pair with my Pentax 55-300?

Should I buy a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 HSM II to pair with my K7?

I know I should buy both, but that's unfortunately not one of the choices

Umm, I'm sorry elho but that wasn't one of the choices. It's only a F4.0 and a prime. I feel I need the F2.8 for to get higher shutter speed and although a lot of shots are taken between 200 and 300mm there are also lots between 100 and 200 so I need the versatility of a zoom.

So, it's either the Sigma with my K7 or The k5 with my 55-300.

Tough choice. I upped to the K5 in response to similar issues. The DA*300 is not a meaningful solution IMHO because its too long for many shots of kids actions sports in the US. I need the 200-300 range (and at times would be happy to have 200-500) and it isn't f2.8. The DA*300 is also $1400 while the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 is around $800 new. Have you thought about used for both the K5 and the Sigma 70-200 F2.8?

K5 will get you as many stops of gain as the 2.8 lens on the k7 while maintaining the longer reach (And I love my K7, but the high iso is the one thing i wish i had and i have lots of 2.8 and less lenses

Edit: it will be a lot lighter as well.
not denigrating the Sigma (it's actually on my list to get if Pentax doesn't release that range at some point for the prayed for FF body)
Everything i've seen from K5 on hi iso says you will be able to go as hi as 10000-12500 with the same noise as a K7 at 2500

K5

The f2.8 is nice, however with the loss of depth of field stopping down that much, you risk missing more photos. The K5 will allow you higher ISO performance, and will likely result in gaining more stops than the (2?) gained from shifting from the 55-300 to the 70-200. Keep that 70-200 on the wish list for later though, I love mine!

if he's at 2500 right now 10000 is 2 stops
beyond 10-12500 the k5 will drop off as well
the 5.6 @ 300 mm is 2 stops from 2.8, but i would bet the 200 length is likely about f 4.5 so the 70-200 only garners about 1.5 stops at the max

optically of course it is a better lens
It's also HSM and should focus faster
It also has OS which some argue is better at long FL (Adam's test though found no appreciable differemnce)

It also depends on how much precious time the de noising takes

The K5 will allow you to shoot at the same ISO without having to do any denoising (saving precious time) and also preserve fine detail and color accuracy.

Native ISO 2500 - no noise removal with a consumer zoom

What about renting the sigma from camera-lens rentals to see if it will get you what you are looking for.
Or... renting it and the K5, then deciding what body-part you can live without .
