RE: Need Help - Pentax K10D ot K20D

hi all,

new member here and need your expert advise. i am currently using a Pentax K100D and i think it's time for a little bit of an upgrade. i am looking at K10D and K20D. here's the scenario:
1) K10D - around $300 with about 5,000+ actuations w/ 18-55 kit lens. (in California)
2) K20D - around $391 (but at Henry's in Canada) + $35 shipping. total is $426. actuations about 5,000+ also.

my questions are: which should i pick. is it worth $126 more for a K20D? is it safe to buy from Henry's (canada) ? or i could just safe up the $126 and get a prime lens ? is this a good jump from my K100D ? any advise will be highly appreciated.

thanks again,
vic

Henry's is a highly reputable dealer with a 90 days warranty on their used equipment.

I have no experience with the K10D but I can tell you from experience that image quality on the K20D is better than the K7.

I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions here.

Those two have the same sensor, but that's a different matter.

Henry's is a great dealer, and yes, I would say that $91 is worth it for the upgrade to the K20.

You could also pick up either camera on our marketpalce:

BTW, you posted your question in the wrong section (the site help forum is for site issues only), so I moved it to the dslr section.

I have all 3 of those cameras you listed.

The K10D is nice, but the K20D is out of the park nice. To me, it's worth the extra $$.

I just put a new Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 on the K20 and I cannot believe the photos I am getting.

- The K10D won't give you any improvement in ISO noise over your K100D, the K20D will
- The K20D allows auto-focus correction for individual lenses, the K10 doesn't
- The K20 design has been very reliable, the K10 had more reports of front-focus and back-focus

thanks a lot. do i need to worry about the less actuations and about it being in canada (gray market). i heard that it is better to have over 10k actuations than less.

Seeing as you are buying second hand the whole grey market thing doesn't really apply. Any warranty would be provided by the seller and not Pentax. I don't actually see the K20d you are referring to on the Henry's website or in their ebay store, but they are reputable (even if their prices for new gear tend to be high).

Given the age of the cameras you are looking at somewhere in the 5k to 10k range for shutter count is pretty reasonable.

I have the K10 and K20. Just got a K5 so the backup for that will be the K10 and the K20 will be getting converted to IR 720nm.

I have allways got better results from the K10, or at least more that I am happy with. Maybe it is the difference between CCD and CMOS, or maybe Sony and Samsung sensors, but the 20 has been a disapointment.

Very happy with the K5 and its Sony sensor.

Hope this helps.

I have the K10D, the K7 and K5, skipped the K20.

It would be a hard call, but I think the K20 would be better in terms of the sensor high ISO, and in the ability, if you are so inclined, to adjust AF for your lenses.

Otherwise the two are similar. I find the K10 sensor to be very contrasty and less dynamic range, compared to the CMOS sensor of my K7 (similar to K20)

i feel it boils down to your photography skills. Personally, the k10d is more than adequate when i started filming with dslr. THere's plenty of features/functions for you to hone your skills before moving up to a higher end dslr.

I would recommend the K20D. I have a K10D and I hope to upgrade to a K-5 next year. The K20D is a slight upgrade IMHO from the K10D and well worth it given this situation. The larger LCD screen and the better sensor alone are worth the upgrade. Live view, burst mode and higher ISO settings are others.

I have shopped at Henry's many times and they are highly reputable but like Adam mentioned, look in the marketplace first. You can find great deals on both bodies there for far less than what you would pay anywhere else. I have both the K10 and K20 and have had great success with both cameras but if your going to spend the money why not go for the K20 which has a newer release date than the K10 and also has a bigger sensor.

appreciate all the inputs. i decided to get the K10D. the price is just right and it only has about 4,400 actuations. hopefully i could upgrade to a K-7 or K-5 later on.

Congratulations!

IMHO, a properly functioning K10D outperforms a K20D and K-x at lower ISO's. I have all 3 of these cameras and have found the K10 to still produce the best image IQ, color and contrast, in my mind, there is no question about this. The 10mp CCD sensor is just dynamite and will provide you with enough room to print 20x30's if you actually wanted to. I have used it comfortably at ISO640 as well. The Out of Camera JPEG images, when properly exposed with the correct white balance, will require very little Post Processing.

However, my K10 does suffer from some Back Focus issues on a couple fast 50mm AF lenses I own and it is disappointing in this regard. The AF issues seem to be with only these 2. I would not hesitate to purchases another if my K10 ceased to function...
