Why isn't my ASAHI lens working with my K-x?

I have the K-x, and I decided to purchase an SMC Pentax-M 1:1.7 50mm ASAHI lens. I attached it, and while all looks well, it won't let me shoot. I made sure it was properly secured, but yet the F stop box just blinks "F- - -" and the shutter speed window is blank. The ISO is still able to be changed. All looks well through the viewfinder, focus, etc. I mainly use this camera for video, and of course it won't let me shoot with this lens either. Your help is much appreciated!
Brian
