Would you consider getting an external flash? You will have a lot more flexibility that way.

The Vivitar 283 generates over 200V on its hot shoe contacts. DO NOT attach it to the camera hot shoe without an isolator, it will fry the camera.

No, it is 50 watts. It is Vivator DF283 Pen Series 1. Am I right?

I though you were referring to the old 283 Vivitar from the 80's.

I suppose you mean 50 volts and not watts. If that's true, then it is still way too high for the hot shoe on a digital camera. Typically the upper limit is around 5 or 6 volts, although Pentax may support higher voltages, but 50 is way too high.

The best way to know for sure is to turn on the flash without connecting it to the camera and measure the voltage with a volt-meter from the center pin in the shoe (positive) and the side of the shoe groove (negative).

I believe he's talking about the more modern Vivitar. Vivitar DF 283 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount DF-283-PEN B&H

Doesn't look too different than the 383 PEN-1 P-TTL flash. I suspect its the same hardware without the TTL

As to the internal flash on the camera, they are repairable. However, I wouldn't attempt it unless you're generally qualified for electronics repair. I'd take it to a camera repair shop in order to ensure the fix doesn't make the camera worse.

Look my profile picture you see my Vivator.

Amazon.com: Vivitar DF 283 Series 1 Digital TTL Shoe Mount Autofocus Flash for Pentax TTL - VIV-DF-283-PEN: Electronics
I send it to Vivator service.

Seperate I talked about my pop up before I often use pop-up flash since 2 years. I think pop-up's bulb broke. My K-7 work fine without pop-up.

When I get my new Vivator 283 about 4 months ago, I often use it all the time. I know Viviator's body flash are cheap plastic. it can easy broke or crack. because it is too cheap.

Smile.

Camera repair? If my flash on the camera is broken, I will not have it repaired seperately. If it's part of another repair, I will consider it.

Vivitar repair? Contact them for an estimation of costs; new ones are below US$100, so it might or might not be worth it.
