K7,Canon 40D or Nikon D90

A friend ask this question. I recommended the K7..he can borrow my lens. However, he likes the C an N for being well known. He saw adapters on EB that make Pentax legacy lens usable on the Canon..not sure about the Nikon. What are your thoughts. Anyone ever use these adapters? They are less than $10.00

Try to persuade him to get the K-7; he will be happier

Besides who wants to be seen mounting a Pentax lens on a Canikon?

Also without the green button, those old lenses are more difficult to use.

you'll have to get rid of the aperture lever to mount kmount lenses onto canon. Nikon cant adapt kmount.
as for which body, i'd personally go for the d90 as it has the best sensor of that bunch. The k-7 is nice, but i've been too spoiled by the sensor of my k-5

With a crop sensor canon, the aperture lever won't hit the mirror, just the FF bodies.
K mount lenses are useable using the aperture ring in stop down mode A or M. Your friend should decide what kind of lenses they may need and pick a body they like to fit. I think any modern body is pretty capable.

I doubt u friend will invest a lot of money for the lens...
so I think d90 is a better choice since it has the best sensor among the three

I recommended the K7.
Why?

What does he plan to shoot? Where does he plan to take his photography? How can you make a suggestion on a camera body without even knowing what his interest are, or, ask anyone else to make a suggestion without telling them what his interest are?

I have friends who have owned both the C and the N while I've owned my K-7. Obviously I prefer the pentax but my next choice would be the nikon. Never did like the canon....

Of those I'd choose the D90 to be honest.

+1 on above.

But you can tell him all the pro's and con's of the various systems, and he must make his choice and live with it. The use of legacy Pentax glass is a slight plus for the Canon, but 40D is now pretty old spec. WR and SR would be the main K-7 selling points, and the sensor on the D90 would be its best point.

You can also tell him that the D90=K-x as far as sensor goes (not exactly the same, but same family Sony sensor used in both. And D90 high ISO is almost on par with K-x)

D90 is newer than the canon 40d, the 50d is more of it's contemporary and it has a lesser build quality than the canons (plastic body). For some reason Pentax users have a dislike for canon, while their users go to nikon in droves for the d700, but that's ok. I went with canon because the long lenses were a better deal, but the prices are pretty close now.

I recommended the K7..he can borrow my lens. That's why I recommend the K7, and I would be able to play with it. I have a K-x and I'm please to see from KevinR that K-x=D90 sensorwise(close). This would be my buddy's first Dslr, so he would have to figure what he wants to shoot etc like you say. I'm still figuring that out. Neither of us have a lot of cash and that is the main reason I have a Pentax. In the last 2 weeks I picked up 2 Vivitars..28-105/2.-3.8 Series 1 and 28-85/ 3.5-4.5. Both are in great shape although I messed something up on the former. If anyone have the time to look at posts of mine in a thread on Vivitar Series 1 and the Vivitar Series 1 club. Possibly, you can give me some assistance. I will try to copy/paste those posts in the following post. Thanks to all who responded.

I guess it depends on what your friend has now. If he starts from scratch, it's best for him to work out the initial cost for a basic combo first. SR is a greatest advantage for the K-7, but 40D has superior AF and shooting speed. 2 things I don't like about the 40D is poor LCD display and rather unsealed body (will be an issue in sandy environment). My recommend iso is 800 or lower. 1600/3200 aren't really usable even in RAW. I think a mint 40D can be had for less than the K-7 too, with many more good used lenses to choose from. I don't know much about the D90.

My friend finally got a Dslr. He choose a Nikon D70. He has a niece who has a D700 and good lens. She's a professional and recommended the D90 also, but he didn't want to spend that much as a first time Dslr owner. He and I looked a D80 also. I suggested that he avoid the D3000/3100/5000 as you must use AF-S on those if you want auto focus. He was very lucky to get a D70 in great shape and picked up 2 AF lens..28-80 and 80-200 and he is quite happy. Thank you all for your input. Peace.

It's late for me to recommend D200 ^_^. D200 is very nice, focus is dead on pixel to pixel.I got a D200 which cost me $400 USD. I can use Nikon Ai lens as well though I got a second version 80-200mm/2.8 ED D for $380. D70 is a good one too. My first DSLR is a D70. I'd suggest him to replace the 28-80mm to the 18-70mm kit lens. I love that kit lens over others .

Best regards,
Benhai
