That is the conventional wisdom, yes. However, there seems to be a fairly wide range between theory and practical use.

If an LI rechargeable sits long enough without being charged intermittently, they then won't take a charge at all. They either take a charge or they don't. They are just dead. It is true that there is a finite amount of times that you can recharge them, before they just won't last. So it's best not to use a little, charge a little, use a little, charge a little, better to just drain them completely and totally recharge. In my experience this makes them go longer. I sell a brand of bicycle lights, and we have models that include lead acid, nicad, Nickel metal Hydride, and Lithium Ion batteries. As long as they are charged once or twice a year, I have batteries that have lasted 7 or 8 years, but if I don't remember to charge them and they sit for a year, they won't take a charge anymore, and it's to the recycling bin for them.

I just had to recharge my generic NP-400, and it lasted approximately 570 shots. So unless it degrades quickly, I think I got a decent deal on it !! I do a fair amount of viewing on the LCD, and on occasion use the pop up flash too, so, so far, I am pretty satisfied with it. If it keeps this performance up, I think I'll grab another..
