Checking Focus on Rear LCD

How do I check for perfect focus on the rear lcd? If I zoom in to the max on the K7, every pic looks blurry, even those that look perfect on screen. Does anybody know at what zoom level you are seeing exact pixels 1:1?

8x I believe is the 1:1 zoom.

With autofocus lenses I believe you can zoom up to 6x, with manual focus up to 10x. Personally I found anything above 6x is not helping much to improve the perception of focus.

demp, I_trax, I'm not sure what you mean. I was talking about checking focus after taking the picture.

It sounds like you are talking about live view - you can zoom in in live view? how do i do that?

Yes I was talking about Live View. You zoom in by pressing the Info button. You press the OK button to reset zoom to full view.

To check focus after taking the picture can be tricky if you do not record a JPG image. If you shoot RAW only, the camera will do a quick RAW to JPG conversion to display the image on the LCD screen. The conversion is done with preset parameters and it is far from what you can get by manipulating a good RAW converter in your computer.

I found that even photos that look razor-sharp in Lightroom after processing, look relatively fuzzy on the LCD when magnified. If focus is critical, your best chances are to use Live View and auto focus using contrast AF.

Thanks demp, i never knew that! Theres a lot about my k7 i dont know, thats what happens when you dont read the manual. I recently just updated the firmware from 1.0 to 1.3, so now a bunch of things changed.

One thing i did notice, contrast AF in live view (in low light) is very very slow.

Unfortunately this is true. Contrast AF, although very accurate, tends to be very slow even in good lighting and it consumes quite a bit of battery power. But if you really need to nail the focus, it is the best option. There are no front/back focus issues either, since you are using the actual sensor to focus.
