Kurt, I know Jatrax asked for that coin information, but I found it fascinating, as well. So, thank you! Jatrax, I'm curious about which "old country". My father was from one.

Ha, ha! That is always a good question. My wife has traced ancestors back to Germany, Alsace-Lorraine, Austria, Ireland, Poland, and Slovenia. Part of the problem is what country needs to be defined by what year it was when they left, as borders changed so much depending on who won the last war.

She has a cousin in Slovenia she found and communicates with. They were able to compare photos and found pictures of the original farmhouse in Slovenia both with the family here in the US and in Slovenia. It was pretty cool seeing that history come back together after so many years.

[Wrong button}

When I try to open the downloaded file, nothing happens and it does not expand.

Downloaded file is..
427_1314745052_690168634_pentaxkxfirmwareupdateversion102

I never saw any files similar to the ones mentioned on the Pentax firmware update sit.

I need to get past this problem so we can get on to bigger and better things

Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Kurt (Atlas is my motorcycle)

Ok...
So, the first half of my message comes second..
As you might guess, I am unable to update my firmware.

I formatted a new SanDisk 4GB card.
Bought a card reader to avoid "bricking" Ole Red.
Downloaded a fresh version of 1.02, just in case there was something wrong with my last attempt. (That took 40 minutes with dial-up.)
But the downloaded program does not respond as expected.

Thanks.
Kurt

Did you download it here?
Latest K-x Firmware Update : Software Downloads : PENTAX

The file is called "kx_e102w.exe" when I download it.

No that didn't work any better.
I've lost about 12 hours today, and many pages of useful text trying to get and give information. I cannot continue to throw away my life like this.

The learning curve is not steep, the teaching curve is flat.
And it is very discouraging

Having lost several pages of properly prepared text, that I cannot afford to reproduce, let me continue with the short versions.

Red cameras reflect red light. especially when photographing highly reflective silver coins.
I've had people look at my coin pictures and say,"Hey, you've got a red camera."

Pentax Copipod is neat, but my '95 GEO is dying, and I cannot spend any money on another project.

I didn't have any problems updating my K-5, it almost did that by itself and the instructions on the Pentax page says everything you need.

now for a few pics...

I'm sure they won't be properly placed in the text, but do your best to decipher.

DOESN'T UPDATE...

I double click on downloaded file, and it doesn't extract anything remotely recognizable as a read me file.

I don't doubt every one else's skills or technical expertise, or ability to communicate.
But there is something that I am not doing correctly, and your patience and perseverence is appreciated.

That file-name sounds way wrong.

1. Download it again from: Latest K-x Firmware Update : Software Downloads : PENTAX
Remember to click on the correct one, Windows or Macintosh.

2. Click on the file and it will ask where to extract the files.

3. Put the .bin file on a newly formated SD-card.

4. Put the card in the camera.

5. Hold down Menu when startin the camera.

6. Follow the instructions on the screen and the Readme file from the downloaded file.

When I double click on Kx-e102w.exe It says publisher could not be verified. I hit the RUN button, and it opens another window WinSFX32M V280 5.12
When I click oK, it disappears.

???

Kurt,
1) download kx_e102w.exe (you already have this)
2) double click on it to extract
3) This will run WinsFX32m v2.8 which is the extraction program
4) Make a note of what it says in the "Install Directory" field, this is where the file will be placed when extracted
5) The extracted file should be called FWDC206B.BIN it should be 10, 752kb when extracted
6) Copy this file to the SD card and then follow the directions in the readme.txt file which is in the same directory as the .BIN file

Here is the readme text:
3. Insert the update SD/SDHC card (prepared in step 1) into the camera
and close card cover.

4. Turn the camera power on while pressing the MENU button.

5. "NOW LOADING" appears in the LCD monitor, and will change to the
"PROGRAM UPDATE". At the bottom of the LCD monitor,

CURRENT VERSION 1.00/1.01
UPDATE VERSION 1.02

will be displayed.

6. Press the four-way controller to select "YES" and press the "OK" button.

7. "UPDATING" appears on the LCD monitor and updating starts.
Please do not under any circumstances switch off the power before the
update is completed.
It will take approximately 90~150 seconds to complete update.

8. When update is completed, the "COMPLETE" will be displayed at the left
bottom of the LCD monitor, then turn the camera off.

9. Remove the update SD/SDHC card from the camera.

10. To check the Firmware version in your camera, turn the camera on while
pressing the MENU button.
Check that the version displayed in the LCD monitor is "Ver.1.02"
The camera automatically starts up after about 5 seconds.

(Caution)
When updating is finished, the update SD/SDHC card still contains the
Firmware file.
If you want to use this card to take pictures, delete the Firmware file
first.
