What can I say, it is a great camera. I was thinking abou k3 and k5iis, and i regret nothing If you can get one used.

I had about 40,000 actuations on my K-x before I sold it. Didn't have the K-5 long enough before I sold it with 5,000 actuations. I've had good experiences with the shutter on all of my cameras. A Nikon D300 had 170,000+ actuations before I sold it and it had no indication of failing any time soon. My D700 has about 200,000 actuations and I wouldn't be surprised if it reached 300,000+. I take as good of care of my cameras as possible and hopefully that makes a difference. Protecting from impact may be key. One day I may just take an old camera just to see how many times the shutter will function before it fails.

Most are rated for at least 100,000 activations. However the shutters are a 3rd party part from Cobal who makes shutters for a lot of manufactors. Keep in mind you have the mirrorbox and many other moving parts.

I said some time ago I am not worried about the shutter in my K20D its everything around it. So far that has turned out to be true. My spring for the SD card door let go. My rear edail started to act up a bit. Now the camera does not remember the aperture setting. Only the aperture. Its not a setting issue. Something is wrong inside the unit. Its being repaired right now.

So in reality its almost impossible to gauge how long the useful life of today's dSLRs are. If everything around the shutter was made to live a very long time as it once was the shutter would be the limit. Times have changes IMO everything around the shutter is designed to last???

Do keep in mind I have owned my K20D for three years have over 53,000 pics on it. Used it daily and in bad weather.

Sure it is not worth to worry about the shutter count. But if the camara fails on another place - in my case (K20D) it was the sensor, which produces a black line in every picture - this number can help to decide, whether it is worth to repair or better to replace (e.g. the sensor repair would cost € 540). Now I own a K-3 II, since my K20D had at least a shutter-count of 50.000.

I had a camera similar to the K20D that had over 170,000 actuations on it before I sold it. Never, ever gave me any problems. I bought another camera rated for 150K. It had over 170,000 actuations when I bought it. I've been shooting fearlessly for about 20,000 shots. Take care of your camera and it will generally take care of you. The shutter rating is almost absolutely negligible. They give you a number, you worry and worry and think and think about it. It will either fail very early because of a freak manufacturing flaw or it will last far, far beyond the manufacturer's rating (assuming you're not one of those people who always carelessly bang their cameras around). Something else may fail before the shutter. You may part with the camera before the shutter fails. I put about 100,000 actuations in a year at my peak a couple years ago. Most people don't shoot enough to worry about it.

As said, Pentax DSLRs are generally rated for 100k shutter actuations

The K-3 (and, I suppose, the K-3 II) has been upped to 200K actuations by Pentax.

Yeah the entry level if I recall right like K30, K50 are rated for 50K.
K5, K5-II are rated for 100K.
K3 and K3-II are rate for 200K

Except if you buy used or are quite active shooter I would not worry on it that much. As a pro shooting a lot you may want some body with a good rating.
