Venting........

I choose to have a Pentax.......I have always had a Pentax........I now have a Pentax K5....... a very capable camera..........more capable than me sometimes.......but the denigration I have received from Australian so called professionals.........get a real camera.........you wont be considered pro with out a canikon...........only has s*&t lens'.........and today I was told my sigma 50-150 was crap and the whole world thought so......

I know I know......its only the internet but whats with this? Do I go around telling people what to shoot with.......as if I give a rats what your choice of poison is........

so now I can only play with you guys..........is that ok?

I feel your pain. Go get a K-01 for social shooting. Then cover your ears as you are denigrated by everyone!

Their is a lot of simple brand snobbishness and technical ignorance out there.

Any real 'pro' will recognise that the skill of the photog is more important than the gear they use.

Personal example: I've been shooting up against newspaper pro photogs at various events even with my K-x, and produced better work than their D700's and Nikon glass. Simple things like knowing the best angles to shoot from, and the best place to setup at an event will sometimes trump using all the best gear in the world.

Also just stick a battery grip on your K-5. Instant 'pro' status for most people.

This is a good video to dispel any doubts about K-5 and pro-dom:

'So what's up with this Pentax system? Everyone knows pro's use NIkon or Canon, so why are you using THAT?. This why the K-5 system rocks'

Though Pentax have received almost nil respect worldwide, it seemed particular worse when I was living in Melbourne. The camera shops didn't even bother to serve me as soon as they heard "PENTAX". Even the service centre was crap. Tells you something.

This is absolutely the other way round here in Europe. Pentax is common in the most better camera shops. While canikon is always present in the electronics department stores. So people here see Pentax as a specialist camera/tool. And that's often de reaction that I get when I'm out shooting. Canon and Nikon users sometimes come up to me and ask about my camera: "That's some camera you've got there, must have been very expensive."

Seems like Pentax gets the most crap in the US.

In fairness, Pentax is well represented in most camera stores Australia-wide and many usually (eg even my local country camera store) have Pentax enthusiasts on staff. The local distributor has been working with Pentax for a long time and I think has been doing a pretty good job.

The problem is other photographers and their prejudices. If it's any consolation, a lot of 'pros' also love to hate on Olympus and Sony.

Real professionals do not 'hate' any brand. They can do excellent photo work with any camera.

I'm lucky enough to do some fall photography for schools and some of the master photographers have their own very successful businesses and of course have very large looking Nikons & Canons. However, when discussing cameras with them it's generally along the idea that 'cameras are tools, that's all!'.

Yes we can get into interesting debates about features and how one manufacturer is better in this respect but not as good in something else but I've never come across a real anti Pentax bias. I've just been lucky I guess or else I get to hang around with real professionals who understand the photo business.

They all have their favourites but not at the expense of 'dissing' other people's cameras or other brands.

There's a lot of clowns out there, Most who feel they have to berate, are more likely themselves threatened that you are producing better photos than they are, regardles of what brand gear you are shooting with, and more scared that you may produce better work than they can, with what they see as inferior equipment. Don't worry about what they say, let your pics answer for you.

Interestingly, I haven't had anyone insult my choice of cameras yet. After getting a lomo La Sardina for Christmas, I wonder if that'll change.

janstew: The people that are telling you these idiotic things are douchebags that aren't worth the gunpowder it would take to blow them up. I would suggest to them that they let the cut under their nose heal.

That's why you should always carry a roll of gaffer or duct tape with you to assist in bandaging cuts.

Quite right. Best tactic: Turn around and walk away. Don't dignify their idiocy with a reply. And don't pull out your taser.
