Sigma DC 17-70 (1:2.8-4.5)

Hi guys,

Well I saw a few questions asked recently regarding the lens in the title. I happened to receive this lens for Christmas It makes a fantastic upgrade from the 18-50 kit lens on my K100D Super.

My comments are as follows:
  • Faster AF than the old kit lens or my Sigma DG 70-300
  • Fantastic Image Quality - very sharp and beautiful colours
  • f2.8 at 17mm is very handy, f4.5 only kicks in past 63mm!
  • Haven't noticed any Chromatic Aberration yet
  • Great build quality
  • Heavier than kit lens but not too heavy
  • MASSIVE filter diameter of 72mm (I need new filters!)

I've noticed a very slight bend at the wide end of the lens which actually gives quite a nice effect in a lot of cases, and also easily corrected during PP. This is consistent with the photozone review of this lens.

Of course you will want to see some sample photos I took the lens on holidays over Christmas down to Melbourne, Geelong and the Great Ocean Road. I will share with you two photos that are handy (I haven't processed all 400+ shots yet!!).

A pier along the waterfront in Geelong (17mm, f8.0, M, some PP to bring out the sky colours better):

A friend took this portrait shot of myself and my little nephew (34mm, f5.6, Av, adjusted levels only):

Definitely! Great value for money and much fun.

In addition to my review I have found the macro capability of this lens seems quite a bit better than that on my Sigma 70-300.
