K-5 vs K-r autofocus system and performance

I have a K-r and have thoroughly enjoyed using it over this first year I've spent learning DSLR cameras. It's a great value and is quite a capable little camera.

One thing I am a bit disappointed with, however, is the auto focus system. I know based on reading this forum over the past few months that Pentax AF is an area that many think needs improvement.

What I am interested in is knowing the difference (if any) in AF performance between the K-r and the K-5. I am not concerned about discussing tungsten front focus or particular lens front or back focusing issues, just general AF accuracy. What is the difference in the system? For example, is the center point of the K-5 any different in size than the K-r? Is the K-5 any faster or more accurate than the K-r? Is one likely to get more in focus keepers with the K-5 than the K-r?

I am well aware that the K-5 is a better camera overall and I drool at the mere thought of owning one. My main concern at the moment is understanding the differences in auto focus. Thanks so much for any and all opinions on this subject!

I believe the main difference between the SAFOX IX of the K-r and the SAFOX IX+ of the K-5 is the addition of a light wavelength sensor (color-detection).

http://www.colorfoto.de/testbericht/7/7/6/2/0/2/Test_Autofokus_ColorFoto_2011-09.pdf

Pentax k-5 --- Sharp images 62.4% Acceptable images 28.9 percent Unacceptable images 8.6%

They didn't test the K-r so I don't know how it compares. The K-5 produces Sharp or Acceptable images 91% of the time.

The difference is that the K-5 has what Pentax calls a "light wavelength sensor" whereas the K-r does not, meaning that yes, the K-5 is more accurate when there is less light available. In fact, if you put it in 11-point mode, it's pretty damn accurate (but nowhere near as fast as a Canikon flagship would be).

Thanks guys, this is helpful! I wasn't aware of this feature.

So, is it also more accurate in center point focus mode? I never use the 11 point mode. Thanks!

Interesting article- but what? The k-5 outperforms the 7d? faster and better? What happened?

[edit] or is this an insight in poor auto focus lens performance? [/edit]
