Sorry... I assumed it would work the same as on the K5.
It does. The only difference with the K-5 is that it stays active for a longer time after the shot is taken. (Also the K-5 has better rotational compensation).

Sorry to take so long to get back to the forum. Here are some images I took just the other night. I really don't know if I'm expecting too much from the camera, or if I'm just not experienced enough with it yet, but I find these images to be a bit "off" in sharpness. All of these were taken with the camera in full auto mode using the in camera flash. I did reset the camera to factory defaults when I first got it (I bought it used from a member in the Marketplace). For some reason it just doesn't seem to be as "crisp" as my old ist DL.
Any and all comments are welcomed. The only modifications to the images were resizing to achieve upload requirements.
Thanks,
John

My first thing, as I said would be to turn off your SR !
Because that what it looks like to me.

May know some settings for the pictures? Aperture, shutter speed, focal length?

The second and third picture has a bit of motion blur feel to me.

Also - in comparing with shots from your old istDL, what lens are you using on the older camera? The kit lens is nice, but is slow (F5.6 on the longer end), and it not as good as any prime.

Ive just looked at the exiff info.... It says exposure = 20th of a second ?
There in lies your problem ! At 70mm you will need at least 100th of a sec for a decent pic.

JinDesu, if I'm not mistaken, this is the lens from my old ist-DL.
westmil, shouldn't full auto mode compensate for a decent picture and set a higher shutter speed? As you can see in the first pic, the flash fired; on the other two, it didn't? I wonder if I've buggered some setting in the camera? I may try resetting everything back to factory defaults again. I did just check and it is using ver 1.0 of the firmware, so I'm downloading the update now and will install it.

Sorry - did not see the exif tags. My mistake there.

I believe the k-x's full automode is not very intelligent. I don't use it, so I cannot comment further. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the other settings of the k-x can comment.

I generally use manual or Av mode and keep track of the shutter speed.

JinDesu, My ist was my first venture into the DSLR arena and it did a pretty good job on auto. I have used Pentax gear since the old Spotmatic days, through K1000, ME Super, and SF1, with a brief excursion in to the land of Canon, and used manual modes on most of them. For some reason, I just can't seem to get comfortable with all of the options on the newer equipment. Maybe I'll just go back to using manual, or semi manual modes and see what happens then.
Age and old habits quite often don't mix well with new technology!

If you were in program mode it should have set the correct shutter speed and even reconise you were using flash.
one thing which might cause this, is, the flash was not fully charged and ready to use.
Always check your flash ready signal.

Westmill, I'll have to check that out. I just updated the firmware and reset the camera back to defaults and turned off SR. I'll try some more tests this weekend and see what happens. The exif on the first shot confuses me since I know I had the camera in full auto mode. Maybe I hit the dial and slightly moved it off of the auto mode into portrait mode (i just checked and the dial does move pretty easily).
Thanks for the info.

Like JinDesu, I'm seeing some motion blur, in all 3 shots.

I see no reason to turn off SR. I've used it for years with good results.

If you're shooting JPG, it could be the K-x is nto applying as much sharpening as the DL did.

Here's a little sharpening applied to #2...

That was a big differance, but if you look at the exif, they were shot at 20th of a second !
The pics do tend to go a bit bitty too when put on here I think anyway. At least mine did lol.
