Decision - D7000 vs K-5 , have a look at these photos

New here, have been looking around for months to choose a dslr. Really like specs of K-5, size and WR.

My only source for comparison is Flickr pics. Honestly most of the time it looks to my eyes that K-5 pics are not in focus as those form D7000. May be BF/FF which should be corrected
by in-camera adjustments, ok.

Have a look at this and others from the same guy which are from D7000,
Tattooed... | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Here are some that I think are among the best from K-5:
- Véronique - | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Regard sur l'innocence / Look at the innocence | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I do not know, but the one from D7000 look different and better to my eyes, colors, shadows, focus. Why? Is it because of post-processing? Is it filters? Is it ...

Um, are you going mainly by the one pic you posted "Tattooed"? This is going to get good

They share the same sensor for all practical purposes. The only things that will matter at that point are lenses and post processing. The pictures you are posting are very different in subject (background, primary subject, lighting) and different lenses. It's not very easy to say which camera is better at rendering from those shots.

In general though, many people praise Pentax for their lenses rending very well (FA limited series, FA 31, FA 43, FA 77), while I don't hear that much of Nikon lenses. Nikon is supposed to have better AF, but a few tests have shown that the k-5 performs very well in comparison.

Is this better AF that most say, about more accurate AF or faster AF?

I did not mean that D7000 is better than K-5, just wanted to know the opinion of professional photographers that what can be the reason that the D7000 sample that I posted, if you agree, looks more pleasant. That is why I mentioned PP, filter, etc, since I think that pic is not directly from camera. Can it be ? Also look at others from the same photographer on Flickr. They are different.

I believe the D7000 does trump in speed of AF, but accuracy I am not so sure. Many people will vouch for the D7000 in AF, especially low-light. However, there have been some tests done that show the k-5 is more accurate if slower.

Again - the differences in the picture are far more than just camera. The subjects are different. The backgrounds are different. The lighting is different. The lenses are different. The post processing is different. The settings are different.

For example, to steal from the DA*55 photo thread:

I instantly believe this shot is far prettier than the three you have linked.

JinDesu, I agree that all those parameters are importrant, but don't you think the pic that you posted, is not in focus at all? This is why I asked about focus accuracy vs focus speed.

The K-5 images were shot with a Sigma zoom, while the nikons seems to have been taken with a 50mm prime, you'd be hard pressed to get better results out of any zoom over a prime, and much harder with Sigma glass.
Lighting is completely different one seems to have used very nice natural available light, the other used artificial lighting, and although it's not "bad" lighting, it's certainly not great.
All in a all the picture selection make it a very uneven and unreliable method of comparing 2 cameras.

Are you seriously trying to compare all the variables of camera systems and photographers by 2 photos?

Thanks Jase, that is why I asked about it, since it looks different. I think ambient natural light and lens are the important factor in that image.
Can anyone please post some good portrait ones from K-5. Honestly I could not find any great on Flickr.

Well here are 2 shots. They are not my best photos, but they might suffice.
On this first I did use AF ( a lot of the time I use manual primes for my portraits). Light levels were a little low as there were no lights for focus expect the main light's modeling light set at about 1/4 power, the other lights in the capture are speedlights so they didi not add light for focusing purposes.

And Here is ambient light + silver reflector, but I used an old M series 50mm f/1.4 so no AF.

Nice photo's Jase - no complaints there.

lnb14 - if you are into shooting old prime lenses (and Pentax has plenty of very good old lenses to choose from) then the K-5 is ideal. Very easy to set up for, easy to focus, and get focus confirmation. The K-5's in-body shake reduction applies this technology to all lenses mounted. It is a pretty good package in that regard. I am not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but I am having no problems nailing focus using old MF lenses.

Regards,

Ross

Just buy a camera. D7000 or K5 doesn't make much difference. They both have the same sensor.

Both Pentax and Nikon have been around for over 50 years and neither seems to be going out of business.

You will find more difference in how the actual photographer captures a scene than you will in the difference between these two camera.

Stop asking questions. Go and buy a camera, shoot with it and begin the learning curve.

AND don't blame the camera if you can't get a shot. Improve your technique.

Regards

Chris Stone
