Why AF isn't needed by HDSLRs doing Cinematic video

And by this I mean the shallow DOF stuff...not the wide DOF stuff you get out of a camcorder or P&S that you do for family videos which HDSLRs are *NOT* as good with but people seem to keep trying to do it

Check out this review of Zeiss vs. Canon lenses by Vincent Laforet (who can afford to shoot w/ $10K Red Epic cameras yet uses manual focus)...
