Basic Astro phography primer

My son and I are going star gazing this weekend. It look like great weather for it. Just need some basic start up tips. My equipment is a K20d, 35-105mm, 70-300mm zoom, 50mm and a tripod. Just want to try some basic stuff. Thanks Todd
