Usually that's just something the companies say to cover their ass.

Generally a camera will last *much* longer.. but if they *say* it will, people will use that against them if it doesn't.

I think the *ist Ds was rated for 40,000 - 50,000.. but I know people that are in the 150,000 range and still going strong.

Just to give some perspective to this from one point of view:

100000 is actually quite high number for hobbyist camera and have always been. K10D is tool for advanced hobbyist, not for pro . And if shutter breaks after that number of shoots, camera is not disposable yet, it is just repaired.

If we think number of shots when we were using film, 100000 is 2777 36 pictures films. If you took one roll each week it would have taken 53 years to reach this number. Or 26 years if two were taken per week and 13 years for four and so on. And if each of them costs, lets say 8€, it is 22222€. Value of new car spent to film. Price of an good car. This 8€ was not the only cost....

These are not big numbers for professionals, but I am certain that even for average advanced hobbyist they were. Very few of us took 2-4 rolls per week every single week troughout the year with same camera body 13 - 26 years. In these calculations shutter service costs were minor issue :-)

Middle class SLR shutters were not planned for such a amount of shots. This problem of shutter durability has rosen just with the dawn of digital era. Now our shots are "free", and ´oh boy! we really are shooting now... :-)

I thought 100,000 is pretty good. double what even the Canon 20d/30d is rated for and the 30d costs more than the K10d..

I agree.

I suppose that my rate of fire will be ~200 per month, average. I have a family and work, not enough time for taking photos

200 shots/month equates 2400 per year. So it will take 41 years to reach 100000

I can even double that rate and keep my K10D 20 years before fear of shutter repair. I doubt that it will last that long anyway.

Yes, and so? What for are those actuations made for? filling your hard disk with gigabytes of what?

You are not making any sensible photographing while doing so.

Sounds similar to me, than saying that by raising up your cars wheels and putting brick on accelerator you can rotate the odometer to 100000 in 20 days. Whatever you would like to do that for?

It's not only. This is very good number. Canon Rebels were rated 50,000 releases. They rating 20D and 30D 100,000.

So, do you still think it is only?

Well, I think that over the course of a full year I doubt I shoot more that an average of 200 shots per week. That is about 10,000 per year. At that pace the camera will be 10 years old before I get to 100,000. I bought the DS a little over a year ago. 1.5 years later the K10D comes out and if I could afford one it would be in my hands now, but with well less than 10,000 shots on the DS.
Unless you are a pro with a staff to help you process your shots, I doubt you could reach 100,000 in less than 5 years. By that time a fancier, sexier camera will be out.

Hi,

Are you a Machine gun shooter? Do you take 50 images of the same thing? If you do than 100,000 is a smal number. Try using a smaller memory card that will give 36 shots and your camera will last a whole lot longer.

I use my camera every day and have racked up 7,165 shots since August 28th (4 months) on my K100.

I'm hoping that 100,000 figure is REALLY a conservative estimate.
