However, if it comes down to either a small FF, or a large FF with matching large VF the choice is clear. I wouldn't even hesitate buying a larger FF if it had a real VF, similar to the MX. Although Pentax is focusing on compact equipment, I hope they don't forget most FF users don't want a compact viewfinder.
agreed but they are the guys who said they saw no reason any dslr shouldn't be a 100% VF (which is a start, now what about .97X magnification on the FF one )

I bought Pentax because of the compact and rugged body - and "good enough" image quality. If they make an FF it needs to be just that to get my interest - but just if I get a full size vf as well.

If I wanted big and heavy I would have gone Nikon already

I would like a Pentax FF with even better noise performance than the K-5 which means larger pixels. A 16 to 20 meg FF would be perfect for nightsky/nightscape/low light work. If you look at the specs/graphs at DXOMark, the 800/800e bring nothing to the game over the K-5, in the areas of dynamic range and noise. A slight increase in physical size wouldn't bother me and the improvements in focusing in the new K-30, carried over to a FF model, would be a perfect FF Pentax.

The DXOMark data shows that the dynamic range and noise of the D800 is 2.4x and 40% as much as the K-5, as you'd expect if two cameras are using the same pixels and one is using 2.4x as many pixels.

I'd suggest you look at the 'print' settings at DXOMark.

Don't care about size. My GF keeps saying what matters is what you do with it... regardless, I'm still getting the D800 and dumping my Pentax gear on this site by January.

whachu got? I'm doing dual system, myself, partially because Mrs. ElJamoquio will probably never become a Nikonian.

Getting the D800, 70-200 and 24-70. I'll throw in a 85G, 24G and 16-35 at some point. I had a chance to work with the D800 a few weeks ago and the viewfinder and AF gave me a hard-on.

I'll probably keep my K10D since nobody will want it and it's a good backup in case the shit hits the fan.
Otherwise my K5 and grip, FA77, FA43, DA35, DA12-24, DA*50-135 and VL58/1.4 will all go

I can't stand the AF issues I've had with the K5 in low light anymore, and since I've started selling 30x40+ prints, the extra real estate will help as well.

It sounds like you wouldn't be interested in a Full-frame Mirrorless, then. It's a combination that makes a lot of sense to me, if they get the EVF right (which is a big "if", admittedly), for getting maximum image quality into the smallest size and weight. I think the physical limit on how small you could make it would be roughly the same as the usability limit: some of us have large hands and want lots of large buttons.

Presumably not the Ladyfinger variety, then.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I have no use nor desire for an EVF. Maybe Pentax can make an APS-C mirrorless with gimmicks like that for the consumer needing the latest and greatest, but for serious shooters (I'd place myself in this category) I want a real SLR. By the way, I have owned cameras with EVFs and didn't like them.

I also have a hard time with small cameras due to larger hands. I always have a grip attached to my camera and agree a K10/20D would be the perfect size for a FF.

I believe those numbers can be interpreted as some sort of distance, measured in units of some long-dead king's thumb.

If I were to make such a move I'd go for the primes first. Mostly because if I were to switch to FF for the better IQ and AF, I would also want the best IQ from the lenses. Secondly, I'd be holding on to some of my Pentax gear. I'd at least throw in the 50mm f/1.8G with your D800 to start off with so you can have one fast prime to exploit. It's only $215! I guess if you don't use that focal length much though, there wouldn't be much appeal.
