Long exposures and IR intervalometer problems

I am having some problems with my K-x in bulb mode with my intervalometer.

It seems that my intervalometer does not send another "pulse" at the end of an exposure to close the shutter, so Mode 1 (one click - shutter opens, next click - shutter closes) only allows a 30 sec exposure, 30 sec wait, 30 second exposure etc. This really isn't ideal for astrophotography as half the time is wasted.

In Mode 2 (hold to keep shutter open) it will only open the shutter momentarily because the IR unit only sends a pulse, not a toggle (or constant signal/pulse).

I am trying to expose for over 30 seconds. I've tried fiddling with the Delay, Interval and Exposure settings on the unit but it seems that no combination is going to make this work.

This is one of the problems with entry level cameras and just not Pentax, where they only have IR support and no wired remote support. I had not really thought this one through previously. The other problem is the lack of IR options, as the wired options tend to provide a bit more versatility. You don't indicate what you are currently using. That may help - and indicate what IR setup and its limitations. Here is a DIY cludge, that may help - in that you can integrate in a wired intervalometer that may solve the dilemma. Here is another set of possible solutions...I have not really used any of them, since I have only used the wired option to any extent. YMMV....

This is my exact unit (I copied it from this thread a long time ago).

The GentLED system won't work as I need to be able to easily set exposure time with buttons and an LCD, not with a little screw. Same with the Pclix, I don't really want the limitation of turning knobs.

You know - I am fresh out. there is an abundance of options in the wired end, and a lack of them in the IR area. Other than asking one of the vendors to mod their product, I don't see an easy solution.
