K-30 and panning shots

If I would play some shots using the panning technique, (e.g. :following a dog with the camera during a side run, set the focus on it and shot, to make the dog be on focus and the ambient moving) can I do it quite simply with k-30?
Or will I find several problems due to autofocus slowness instead?
Perhaps is the k-5 more suitable for this?

Thank You

I can do it with a K200D. I would think the K30 should also be able to do it. Be aware though that much like the tires on the race car the dogs legs will be blurred. It goes along with the slower shutter speeds needed to blur the background. Effective panning does take a bit of practice to get the technique down.

Doing this properly depends far more on you than on the camera, I have done it with my K100D and 18-55mm, I've also done it manual focus. The focus speed is the least of your worries, getting a good smooth pan that matches the speed of the moving object well enough that it stays sharp is the hardest part. You're bound to get it wrong the first time, probably the first dozen times, just keep working at it.

Do you use a monopod?
